FAQS

IS PERIODONTAL TREATMENT PAINFUL?
During any periodontal procedure you should have no discomfort as the periodontist will use a local anesthetic, just like your general dentist uses when he/she does a filling or a crown. Many periodontal procedures involve surgery.  They may necessitate you to take medications like Advil, Tylenol, or Motrin.  If the Dr. thinks you may need stronger pain medication to control the discomfort he/she will write you a prescription.

WILL I MISS WORK?
If a surgical procedure is done, we normally recommend you take the day off work. You should be able to return to work the next day.

HOW SUCCESSFUL IS PERIODONTAL TREATMENT?
The studies show an 85% success rate over 20 years in being able to retain your teeth in comfort and function.  That success rate has many varying factors.  Those factors would include your underlying health issues, genetics, compliance with periodontal maintenance (cleaning appointments), and of course your daily oral
hygiene procedures.  You only have to floss the teeth you want to keep.
HOW SUCCESSFUL ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Success depends on the individual and the location of the implant as well as the experience of the surgeon and the restorative dentist. We are selective about when and where we will place an implants. Studies show a 90% success rate over-all.

WHY DO I HAVE TO HAVE PERIODONTAL SURGERY?
Not every patient that sees a periodontist needs surgery.  Normally your dentist and hygienist treat those patients that have gingivitis.  When the disease has progressed to periodontal disease, with bone loss, surgery is still the most efficient way to treat the disease.

IS PERIODONTAL DISEASE CONTAGIOUS?
You can’t call periodontal disease contagious, but the bacteria that causes the disease are often transferred to your spouse and children.

HOW DO YOU DIAGNOSE PERIODONTAL DISEASE?
Periodontal disease is diagnosed by your dentist and/or hygienist by examination, periodontal probing, and dental radiographs.

WILL MY DENTAL INSURANCE PAY FOR THIS TREATMENT?
You must remember that dental benefits are just that, a benefit.  Insurance companies can cover anywhere between 50 to 80% toward treatment depending on deductibles, and your yearly maximum.  It is always a good idea to contact your insurance company to find out if you have a waiting period and what your coverage includes.  We will be happy to ASSIST you in attaining the maximum benefits toward your treatment.

WHY DO WE PLACE FLUORIDE?
The use of fluoride can prove to be beneficial for adults especially if they are at a higher risk for decay.  If you have dry mouth, periodontal disease, gum recession, are wearing braces, or have had radiation to the head or neck you would fall in this category.
